Madrid is one of the cities with the largest collection of works in the world and some of its museums are among the most important, so much so that they form the Triángulo del Arte. Being a city rich in culture and history, it offers exhibitions of all kinds: from romanticism to contemporary art, from those tracing the history of the city and Spain to those dedicated to geological and archaeological sciences.

Museo del Prado

Considered one of the most important museums in the world, the Museo del Prado houses masterpieces by the greatest Italian, Spanish and Flemish artists, but the works inside are not the only protagonists.

The building was desired and founded by Charles III, King of Spain from 1759 until the day of his death but was only finished and inaugurated in the early 19th century. At that time, it only housed some works of the Spanish Royal Collection.

Today, however, it is home to the most comprehensive collection of Spanish and international painting in the world, boasting some of the most famous works and a reason for painting lovers to visit. Among these works are Las Meninas by Diego Velazquez, the Triptych of the Garden of Delights and Seven Deadly Sins by Flemish painter Hyeronimus Bosch, Maja vestida and Maja desnuda, or Goya's May 03 1808, Spasimo di Sicilia by Raphael Sanzio, David and Goliath by Caravaggio, etc.

In short, the list of works not to be missed can be really long.

Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum

Located in the Villahermosa Palace, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum is one of the most important centres in the Spanish capital, telling the story of European painting from the Middle Ages to the end of the 20th century. The museum's collection adds to the collection of works in the city. Starting with the 14th century art of Duccio di Buoninsegna and Jan Van Eyck, passing through the 15th century and then Ghirlandadio and Carpaccio to Durero, Caravaggio, Rubens and Canaletto from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Among the Romantic painters we find Friedrich, while among the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists we have, respectively, Monet and Degas and Gauguin and Van Gogh. It also boasts works by Picasso, Kandinsky, Dali and Chagall.

Museo National Centro de Arte Reina Sofia

The Museo National Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, dedicated to modern and contemporary art, is located in a neoclassical building in Atocha, where the old General Hospital of Madrid once stood.

Amongst the 18,000 works inside, we find some highlights such as Pablo Picasso's Guernica, which attracts most visitors, but we also find Dali with his Face of the Great Masturbator and Girl at the Window, then The Palm House and Snail, Woman, Flower, Star, one of Joan Miró's wild paintings, Juan Gris's Open Window, and Picasso again with Woman in Blue.

That is why you cannot visit Madrid without setting foot in the Reina Sofia Museum.

Museo del Romanticismo

Museum entirely dedicated to Romanticism; in fact, its first name was the Romantic Museum. Where both the building and the collection within it are protected as a Historic-Artistic Monument. It was given its current name in 2009.

Inside, we find not only works of art, but also furniture and examples of decorative art, which provide a better understanding of Madrid's Romantic period. In any case, we find works by such impressive artists as Goya, Leonardo Alenza y Nieto, Federico de Madrazo, Manuel Barrón y Carrillo among others.

The Jardin del Magnolio is worth a visit. It is unique and follows the 18th century French model. It consists of four avenues divided by flowerbeds that all contain a different tree and, in the centre, a circular fountain at the crossroads.

At the end of the tour, why not stop at the Café del Jardin del Magnolio to taste homemade cakes.
